DIETS: The most common important fact in the management of diabetes is diet-balanced diet comprising of food from all the food groups; milk groups, meat group, cereal and bread group, vegetable and fruit group necessary for each meal right from infancy. The amount of refined sugar in the diet should be restricted.
If an individual is overweight, it is important that he loses some weight and therefore must consume fewer calories than individual of normal weight. If the person is underweight, his diet must contain sufficient calories with minimum sugar to increase his weight. It is absolutely important that all people with diabetes maintain normal weight at all times.
Dietary fats and cholesterol should be reduced. This can easily be done by restricting the intake of meat, fats, eggs, and cheese increasing the use of fish.
EXERCISE: Structured exercises are important in controlling diabetes because they burn down sugar. It is important to have constant amount of exercise everyday or on regular basis if possible
INSULIN: This is a hormone that is not adequately supplied by the pancreas of the diabetic and this must be artificially administered either by the diabetic patient or by a trained medical personnel.
Insulin is usually administered under strict medical supervision because both over-utilization and under-utilization are dangerous to the individual and may lead to death. Insulin is used in the management of diabetes, but the type and dose must be determined by the medical officer
